DEL MUNDO CLIMB AT NO.3 SPOT IN WORLD OPEN CHESS

UNITED States Chess Master Anton Paolo del Mundo scalped American Craig Jones in the eight and penultimate round to stay on course in the ongoing US$400,000 total pot prize 35 th World Open Chess Championships yesterday at the Valley Forge Radisson and Convention Plaza, King of Prussia in Pennsylvania, USA.
The former stalwart of Ateneo de Manila varsity chess team notch 6.0 points to share 3rd to 8th placers in the Under 2400 section which offers US$20,000 to the champion.
The rank no.48 in the July Fide rating list Del Mundo is aiming to became the country's Fide Master with 2296, also the ex-Shell Active Chess champion.
1980 Asian junior champion IM Marlo Micayabas beat another American Matt Parry to raise his total 5.5 points and climbed into a tie for 9th to 20th placers.
In the Open section, William Aramil and Joel "Cholo" Banawa bowed to their respective rivals.
Aramil loss to WGM Keteva Arakhamia-Grant in the 8th round to stuck at 3.5 points and was dropped at 49th to 58th placers.
Banawa on the other hand was succumbed to FM Marcel Martinez in the 7th round to remain at 3.0 points and decided to follow the foot step of lone Filipino GM entry Mark Paragua who earlier withdrew his participation because of poor showing.
Paragua and American GM Michael Rohde finished at 2.0 points, both decided withdrew participation to prevent loss sum of Elo rating points.
Paragua, No.3 with 2525 behind top two GM Joey Antonio (2539) and Eugene Torre (2536).
GM Julio Becerra, meanwhile bested GM Jaan Ehlvest to raise his total 6.0 points and tied at 1st to 8th placers in the company of GMs Hikaru Nakamura, Sandipan Chandra, Leonid Yudasin, Evgeny Najer, Alexpander Stripunsky, Victor Mikhalevski and Varuzhan Akobian. Open section offers top prize US$30,000.
Israeli GM Yudasin is Paragua's 5th round tormentor. Other Filipino players were Fide Master Rico Salimbagat, US Master Alan Montalbo, Robert Lardizabal, Allan Salgado, Dexter Pacheco, Joseph Calapati, Herky and Carlo del Mundo.(MARLON BERNARDINO).

Chess wizard wins in Asean tilt
ROSALES -- Seven-year-old Samantha Glo Revita again went home a victor after competing in the eighth Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Age-Group Championships 2007 held in Pattaya, Thailand last June 13 to 22.
Sam was the youngest member of the Philippine delegation but with the most number of medals brought home.
Sam was among the 22 Filipino wood pushers who competed in Thailand, whose trip was sponsored by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
In the individual competition, eight-under division, Sam captured the gold medal in the three-hour standard chess category and the bronze in the five-minute blitz category.
The Philippine team bagged the silver in the 30-minute rapid chess category, standard chess and in the five-minute blitz categories.
Sam's ticket to the Thailand outing was her prize the qualifying competition held last May 1 to 5 in Manila. She was the champion the 2007 National Age Group Championship which she won in 2006, recording a back-to-back feat.
Sam's father, Engr. Sammy Revita, said the Thailand trip was Sam's third foreign competition.
Sam was just six years old then when she first competed in the seventh Asean Age-Group Championships held in Jakarta, Indonesia last year.She bagged the silver in the standard chess and a bronze in the blitz category.
In December 2006, she played in the second Asian Schools Chess Festival held in Singapore. She went home with a silver medal in the standard chess category.
Revita said Sam will prepare for the World Chess Championships to be held in Turkey in November. (LCMY/Sunnex)
