I guess PCC is steadily gaining readership with all the help of seasoned journalists like Mr. Bobby Ang and Mr. Manny Benitez. Lately, I've been receiving news article from a newspaper contributor and US and Philippine National Master, Marlon Bernardino.

GM ANTONIO WINS SINGAPORE CHESS BY TIE BREAK POINTS

COUNTRY'S TOP RATED Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. defeated countryman Singapore based newly-installed International Master Julio Catalino Sadorra in a tie break points to emerge over-all champion in the just concluded First Thomson CC
Championship held June 9-10 at the Thomson Community Club, Thomson Road, Singapore.
Antonio, 45, who hails from Calapan Oriental Mindoro and Sadorra, 21, who had made his Singapore his base after becoming a full-pledged IM following a superb performance in the recent Subic International Open Chess Championship finished with six points after seven games of play to complete a 1-2 finish for the Filipinos.
The three-time Bangkok Chess Club winner Antonio, , a sergeant in the HHSG Unit of the Philippine Army led by Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Romeo Tolentino, and whose stint here was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission headed by Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez, next stop is the 2007 World Open Chess Championship which will be held in Valley ford in Pennyslvania in the United States on June 27-July 4.
Finishing third behind Antonio and Sadorra was Vietnamese GM Tu Hoang Thong. followed by Singapore's Koh Kum Hong at fourth. Two more Singapore-based Filipinos, Clyde Percusia, an architect, and Peter Aguilar, also made it to the top ten.
Percusia finished fifth, while Aguilar ended up eighth. Rounding up the top ten finishers were Singaporeans 14-year old Tan Wei Liang (sixth), Jimmy Ng (7th), Eugene Wee (9th) and Benjamin Foo (10th). (MARLON BERNARDINO).
Young kids compete in 8th ASEAN Age-Group Chess
Championship in Thailand

A TOTAL of 29 young chess players, ten of whom were
crowned champions in their respective age groups in
the recent National Age-Group Chess Championship, will
fly to Pattaya, Thailand today in their quest to bring
honor to the country as they compete against the best
in the region in the 8th ASEAN Age Group Chess
Championship.
The young Filipino chess combatants will pit skills
against their counterparts from Indonesia, Singapore,
Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar and other entries from the
ASEAN region in the under-8, 10, 12, 16, 16 and 18
divisions, hoping to win medals for both the
individual and team events.
The official Filipino top ten entries, on whose young
shoulders rest the country's hopes for gold medals,
include boys 18-under champion Paolo James Florendo;
Karl Ochoa (16-under) Haridas Pascua (14-under) and
Jerad Docena (10-under).
In the girls' side, the country's top bets are Aices
Salvador (18-under), Kimberly Jane Cunanan (16-under),
Chardine Cheradee Camacho (14-under), Brena Mae
Membrere (12-under), Mira Mirano (10-under) and
Samantha Glo Revita (8-under).
The ten young champions' trip to Pattaya has been made
possible through the financial assistance of the
Philippine Sports Commission and top officials of the
National Chess Federation of the Philippines, led by
its president, Rep. Prospero "Butch" Pichay and
secretary-general and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham
"Bambol" Tolentino.
NCFP director Willie Abalos is the team's head of
delegation, while Grandmaster Joey Antonio has been
assigned as coach of the entire team.
Nineteen other Filipino chess players have also signed
up for the tournament, mainly to gain international
exposure and experience. They include 18-under
campaigners Angelo Innocencio Ramos and Susan Grace
Neri; 16-under bidders Angelo Joshua Nuestro, Emmanuel
Eumir Songcuya, Joel Pimentel Jr., Antonito Miguel
Ramos, Emmanuel Elijah Songcuya, Kristine Mae Mariano
and Generose Galope Razo; 14-under Judith Pineda,
Miguel Lahoz, Angelo Exekiel Nuestro and Alfonso
Baldomero Ramos; 12-under Ma. Leonaora Daylo, Eugene
Samonte, Dominique Lagula and Jessen Navarette and
10-under Alder Baldwin Jallorina and 8-under Marie
Antoinette San Diego.
Official venue and hotel for the nine-day tournament
is the Jomtien Thani Hotel in Pattaya.
