NBS Chess Tourney Today

Today is the staging of the fourth of a series of chess tournament sponsored by the National Bookstore. Details below I lifted from chess.com:

THE NATIONAL BOOK STORE FIRST MOVE CHESS TOURNAMENT SERIES

This tournament is aimed at our younger players, 15 and below. It is meant to give the youngest of our players a chance to play chess and win prizes and hopefully ignite the passion for chess in their hearts.

Q: Why is it called a chess tournament series?
A: National Book Store plans to sponsor a tournament on the first Saturday of every month starting March.

Q: When and where will the first tournament be held?
A: The first tournament will be held at Robinson's Galleria, QC on the corner of EDSA and Ortigas Avenue. We will be at the Bestsellers Book Store(4th Floor).Tournament date is Saturday, April 10. Check in for pre registered players will be from 10 am to 12 noon. First round starts at 1 pm.

Q: Who can play?
A: All non-titled players aged 15 years old and under at the date of the tournament may play in the tournament. We will have two divisions: 15 and Under and an 11 and Under.

Q: What is the time control and how many rounds?
A: Five rounds Swiss System, G/30 or Game in 30 minutes.

Q: What are the prizes?
A: There will be trophies awarded to the top 3 finishers of each division. Additionally, medals will be awarded for 4th to 10th place in the two divisions. We will also be awarding a medal for the Top Under 8 player and the Top Female Player.

Q: Trophies and medals?? Why not cash?
A: National Book Store feels that awarding cash prizes takes away from the spirit of the tournament. This is supposed to be a tournament to develop the skills of our younger players. It also allows an entry point for new players into the world of tournament play. We also don't want strong developed players to see this as an opportunity to make money. This tournament is for fun, not money.

Q: Is there an entry fee?
A: Yes there is an entry fee of P200 per player

Q: Sounds great! How do I join?
A: Fill out a registration form and pay the entry fee at any BDO branch by depositing the money into the account of the tournament director. Make sure to bring the deposit slip which is your proof of payment and proof of age (birth certificate, passport...xerox ok) on the day of the tournament.

You must register in advance for this tournament.

THERE ARE ONLY 60 SEATS AVAILABLE.

If you choose to register on the day itself, it will only be done on a space available basis. If no more space...sorry, you will have to wait for the following tournament.

Q: Where do I get a registration form? How do I pay the entry fee at BDO?
A: To get a registration form, text your email address to the tournament director, Mr. John Sy, at 0917-833-3825. He will send you a form. Fill that form out using Word and email it back. Or if you prefer, print out the registration form and fax to him at 723-2298. You may also hand in your registration form to Mr. Alex Dinoy, Mr. Sy's co-organizer.

To pay at BDO, deposit the P200 to John Sy Account no. 1550139302.

Q: Can I register on the day of the tournament?
A: I strongly discourage you from doing that. Registering in advance assures you a spot in the tournament. Depending on whether or not we still have space on tournament day, we may or may NOT allow tournament date registration. REGISTERING IN ADVANCE IS THE BEST THING TO DO.

Q: What if I have more questions?
A: You may text Mr. John Sy 0917-833-3825 or Mr. Alex Dinoy 0922-828-8510

I sent my four chess players for today's event and we will find out how they fare against the other players in awhile.
