(Coach Teddy) Aguila Memorial Cup '08

Here's an email from our friends in MERALCO Chess Club:

In the 1980's and 1990's MERALCO used to dominate the now defunct ESAP Chess Tournament over the likes of Shell, PLDT, PAL, Asia Brewery, Philec,& Concrete Agregates among others. The man behind their 5-consecutive year slam was Teodoro Aguila, who mentored the team that was led by now-National Master Gerardo Cabellon. Thus, when the remnants of that Champion Team learned, from this wonderful site, that Mang Teddy has already passed away, the MERALCO Chess Club immediately thought of something to honor him. And the result was the holding of the AGUILA MEMORIAL CUP last July 2 right at the famous Lopez Building that houses a very conducive playing atmosphere.

And the winners of the half-day blitz event were:

Justin Lim - Best High School Player

Best Senior Player - Jonathan Santiago of SCADA

Best Retiree - Norlito Bersamina

Junior Sol Cruz (LSGH-GS Chess Team) - Best Grade School Player

Some photos from the tourney:

Congratulations!

  1. Kiko,

Thanks again for helping our Club in honoring Coach Teddy or Tito Doro in our own little way. But just a minor correction, kindly edit the phrase "MERALCO's Aguila MEmorial Cup" of the first sentence since it is supposd to be the title of the piece.

BTW, in photos are Justin LIm, Lawrence Kimo & Danny Degollado, Abet Casiano & Justin, Edson Gonzales & Romy Aguilar.
    God bless.
