GM Mark Paragua quits

GM Mark Paragua, Philippines number 3 player, quits the US World Open with 3 remaining rounds. Here's news from very active contributor, US and RP's National Master and Philippine Daily Inquirer contributor, MArlon Bernardino:

PARAGUA WITHDREW IN WORLD OPEN CHESS; DEL MUNDO STILL FIGHTHING

WITH three round to go, lone Filipino GM Mark Paragua decided to withdrew his participation in the ongoing US$400,000 total pot prize 35 th World Open Chess Championships being held at the Valley Forge Radisson and Convention Plaza, King of Prussia in Pennsylvania, USA.

This was after the 23-years-old ranked No.3 GM in the country loss to Israeli GM Leonid Yudasin in the fifth round of the Open section the other day according to chess columnist and weekender head Manny Benitez. Paragua who had an Elo rating of 2525 notch 2-3 win-loss record.

This writer tried to call engineer Ric Paragua about the decision of his son (Mark) but he didn't answer the call yesterday.

Jake Banawa, eldest brother of Joel, informed Mr. Benitez that Paragua decided to withdrew in the nine round swiss system FIDE tournament which offers US$30,000 to the champion. Joel Banawa had 3.0 points, half point head with compatriot William Aramil.

Meanwhile, American GM Alexander Stripunsky scalped German GM Daniel Fridman in the sixth round to share the leadership board with fellow Americans GM Hikaru Nakamura and Varuzhan Akobian and Yudasin. Akobian halve the point with Nakamura while Yudasin also drew with Swedish GM Vadim Milov. Milov raise his total 4.5 points along with five others.

In the Under 2400 section which offers top prize US$20,000, United States Chess Master Anton Paolo Del Mundo beat Fide Master Alexan Kretchetov to improve his record with 4.5 points and share 4th to 16th placers. 1980 Asian junior champion IM Marlo Micayabas, on the other hand nipped Josh Zwagil to notch 3.5 points and tied with 30th to 50th placers.

Fide Master Rico Salimbagat and US Master Alan Montalbo also hurdle their respective rivals to score 3.0 points each.

Other Filipino who participated were Robert Lardizabal, Allan Salgado, Dexter Pacheco, Joseph Calapati, Herky and Carlo del Mundo.(MARLON BERNARDINO).
