Hi there!
Since last week, I have asked myself this question, where is Wesley headed? Que vadis Whiz kid? I am not sure if it's just me, or the whole Filipino chess community is asking this question... What does the NCFP has for him? or What is he into nowadays... Where is he headed? going? What are his goals? What is he planning to do to reach his goals?
Yesterday, when I checked and posted The Weekender's Anniversary issue, I saw a brief write up about wesley's demolition of 18 players in a simultaneous exhibition in MERALCO. Also, I always get to read from news articles him being called The Whiz Kid, Philippine Chess hope, Youngest Filipino IM and National Master and Youngest ever to be part of Olympiad Chess team.
So much for the titles.
Where will he be by October 2007?
If there is one title I would dream to read about Wesley, it would have to be GM Wesley So... dated October 2007 or earlier. Its already June5 2007, 5 days away from my birthday (hahahahahaa!), 4 months away from the October deadline... For him to be one of the four youngest chess player to achieve the grandmaster title.
Wesley's parents I'm sure wishes their son the best and definitely they're working out ways to help Wesley with this. I don't know with NCFP nor the POC though. Any sponsor?
Here is the big question though, can Wesley pull it off? Everybody knows I'm a big fan of Wesley, him being my ka-caviteno, I wish him all the best. My question is really simple, can he make it? Yes, he won the NCFP National Juniors 2007 edition but I feel it does not add anything to his GM chasing.
His performance in the 1st GMA Cup and Subic Open? Do we honestly and objectively see that his games from these tournaments are GM caliber? I'm sorry for thinking this way but I do not want to chase rainbows in the dark. Is this one of the reasons why it's hard for him to get sponsorships?
Or maybe its the other way around.
Maybe we can send him overseas and join as many FIDE rated tournaments with enough GM players that wold make him earn his norms. Maybe it's time to work, act and believe in him, all the more.
June 2007. 4 moths from now, Wesley will be 14 years old. we want him to achieve the GM title before this date, October 9 1993.
Go Wesley!

sus, wesley can do it, ang problema ayaw syang tulungan ng mga kapwa pilipino nya, GMs and sponsors.
ReplyDeletewe at meralco organized a simul with reg. fee para makatulong ng konti sa panggastos ni wesley. and i have given him about 150 chess books for him to read. and i heard mr tee of gibi's shoes is also providing wesley with training software and books.
that's life, mas gusto pang suportahan ng mga pinoy yung mga game fixers kaysa sa isang matinong bata.
if Pichay and the ncfp leaders, bobby ang, mike arroyo, will just talk to MERALCO, PLDT, PAL, and SHELL, wesley will get his gm title quickly. ang problema, mas gusto nila si eugene at si joey, over 50 and over 40 chess masters. Look at who beat them at the SEA games and the asian zonals, the viet who is 15 years old. Look at the recent World Women's Championship, China won it by a mile, their oldest player is 22 and the youngest is 13.
RP Chess really sucks!
