New Kids On The Block

Hello there!

Xavier School's chess coach National Master Erwin Carag, sent us the results of the Rapid Chess Training and Tournament held in Ramon Magsaysay High School - Cubao last March 14:

Daryl Unix Samantila, a 9 year old student of Adamson University was the clear winner in the 2009 RMCHS Kiddies (12 years old and under) Rapid Chess Training Tournament held last March 14, 2009 at the Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School (RMCHS) Chess Room. Samantila upset topseed Paolo Bersamina in an exciting chess match and remained with an unscatched record of 5 wins to cap the chess crown.

Tied for 2ND to 4TH places were Jose Carlo Castro of Sta. Quiteria Elementary School , Paulo Bersamina of La Salle Greenhills and Philip Uy of Bloomfield Academy .Three players were given awards for the top 10 years old and under, namely Alexis Anne OseƱa, Noel Geronimo and John Vasilly Datu. The top 6 years old and under belong to sole winner Liam Ramos of International School . The chief arbiter of the tournament was NM / IA Erwin Carag.

Congratulations to the winners and a pat on the back with a resounding "Pre, tuloy lang ang activities for chess your all helping the scene in small and great ways"

By the way, someone asked me here if I know a place somewhere in the South Alabang and las Pinas) where one can learn chess. hMy thoughts on this:

Try to contact the following:

1. WNM Mila Emperado of Metropolitan Chess Club who happens to reside in Las Pinas City

2. NA Ferdinand Reyes Sr. of Bloomfield. Man, he has been a fixture in Las Pinas Chess scene

3. There is the Alabang Chess Club headed by Councilor Vic Ulanday. Their playing area is much like the Cubao underpass ambience though, noisy, full of people passing-by. At the height of my addiction (yes, show me the 64 squares!) I would make sure I go through the Paranaque-Alabang (Daang Hari)-Cavite route just to play 5 minute games there... To the annoyance of my lovely wife! Hahahaha! Those were the days.

The place is located in an island between the two transportation terminals. You will never miss the place because the Baranggay Alabang hall is there!
